didn't work for me January 5, 2009 L. Scott (Shoreline, WA United States) I never got this thing to work right. It added very annoying noise to the audio track and the video was also always slightly out of track. The website offered no info to help the problem and the tech support was useless. It just seems like a very cheap crude video player with a USB output. I bought a Pinnacle Movie Maker and it and the software worked perfectly, but you have to provide the VCR player. It seems like a much better solution.
Poor picture quality January 2, 2009 B. Manns (White Hall, MD) It's easy to set up---software does what it says which is capturing the video and audio for you. If you want to edit you'll need something separate. Problem with mine was poor video quality---like the head was dirty or damaged. Not a tracking issue and my other VCRS played all my tapes very clearly so it was not my tapes. I have the ION cassette to PC and turntable and LOVE them both. They worked great right out of the box and many months later are still performing fine. Maybe I got a dud that is defective. Also felt the USB cord was not able to attach to the front tightly enough. Just kind of a cheaply made VCR. It's a shame---it was a gift that I asked for this XMAS. Very disappointing! Sending it back for a refund. No remote control provided, either, which is not a big deal, but really, what VCR has no remote??? This product needs some serious tuning up! I think I'll find a way to hook an old VCR right to the computer OR use a stand alone DVD recorder to copy my VHS tapes to DVD.
Useless if You Have A Mac December 22, 2008 D. Williams I'd been hoping to convert a series of old videos, and had seen several places on the web that the Ion could be used with iMovie. I could find nothing on Amazon to indicate whether it would work, so I took a gamble. The instructions for using it with a Mac involved 1) Running BootCamp on your Intel Mac; 2) installing Windows XP; and 3) installing their proprietary software. It sits in a corner of my office, functionally useless...I don't have the software. An excellent concept, but if you're a Mac user, you're basically out of luck.
Needs Improvement December 22, 2008 Sandra Lee (NJ) Installed the converter and it worked pretty well with the first 2 VHS tapes. Then after that there were issues with it playing the next few tapes with skipping and sound issues (although when those tapes were played on a regular VCR there were no problems). Got frustrated so left it alone for a few days. Went back and tried with yet another tape and now all it says is it can't get a signal. Tried uninstalling and re-installing the program. No help. Setup and use are fairly easy although there are no troubleshooting instructions so if you don't have any issues, this could fulfill your needs. But if you have any problems, you're out of luck. I'd wait and see if they improve this one or find another converter that can reliably do the job.
Saved a dying VHS tape!! December 14, 2008 J. O'Malley (California) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This little unit, while no replacement for a regular VHS player, paid for itself in one day by digitizing and saving the contents of a 15-year old VHS tape that was in the process of decomposing. Had that happened, a once-in-a-lifetime event would have been lost forever. Fairly easy to figure out as there are very few buttons. My only complaint is the tracking controls don't seem to have too much of an affect, and there is no way of 'resetting' the tracking once you've messed with it. The software was a little complicated as far as installation, but after a couple of tries and a download, it worked perfectly and allows you to edit and add to your data, including music tracks, effects, titles, etc. Very well thought out and a simple, easy-to-use interface. There are several output options, including uploading directly to YouTube or other online video service of your choice. You can save your finished video in a variety of formats, as well as burn directly to DVD. The only other comment or request I could give to ION would be to make the converter software Mac-compatible!
